Types of Migraines

If you are suffering from a migraine, you are not alone. About 38 million Americans experience migraines every year. While migraines can disrupt your everyday activities, chiropractic care can provide relief. Chiropractic care can help reduce the severity and frequency of your migraines without using medications and invasive procedures. If you are suffering from chronic migraines in the Indianapolis area, our team at Hull Chiropractic is ready to help. Here are some of the common types of migraines we see patients suffering from and how we can help.

Migraine With Aura

Before a migraine starts, patients with this type of migraine see mild hallucinations that differ each time. They could be flashes, double vision, looking as if you are underwater, or that everything suddenly sprouted haloes. Pain is usually on one side of the head. Pain can be so bad that it leads to vomiting. Regular lights, sounds, and smells often become too intense to bear.

Migraines Without Aura

These migraines aren’t accompanied by visual disturbances and can last between four hours and three days. Typical symptoms include head pain on one side, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.

Abdominal Migraines

This migraine is likely to affect your abdomen more than your head. Typical symptoms include vomiting, nausea, stomachache, and loss of appetite.

Menstrual Migraines

This migraine is caused by hormonal changes and is likely to appear before, during, or after menstruation.

Diagnosis and Treatment for Migraines

Our chiropractor can diagnose migraines by assessing a patient’s current health and medical history, including their current medications and whatever treatments they have previously tried. After diagnosing the root cause of a patient’s migraines, our chiropractor creates a personalized treatment plan unique to the patient’s needs. Treatment plans for migraines often include spinal manipulation to reduce stress on the nerves, allowing the nervous system to respond better to pain management. Other migraine treatments can include trigger point therapy, lifestyle adjustment, nutritional counseling, and other non-invasive techniques.
